Why EtnoArt Doesn't Use Lasers
When EtnoArt began, I explored different ways of transferring photographs onto wood. Laser engraving was fast and precise, but the photographic results never gave me the softness, tonal depth and natural character I was looking for.
Many laser-engraved photographs create lighter and darker areas through patterns of tiny marks that the eye blends into different shades from a distance.
I wanted something different.. (see the video below)
EtnoArt uses a custom-built pyrographic system with a heated nichrome element. By precisely controlling both the temperature and the amount of time the element touches the wood, we can control how deeply each area is burned.
Instead of creating the illusion of a tone through dots, we create different levels of darkness directly in the wood itself.
This allows for smoother tonal transitions, softer facial details and a more organic photographic appearance that naturally works with the grain of the birch.
Not laser dots. Tonal shades burned directly into the wood.
Every piece is individually refined until the tones, details and overall feel are exactly where I want them.
